A lot of newcomers to internet marketing are working on a very tight budget.
There are hundreds of free tools available on the internet to do all sorts of jobs, a lot of them are extremely useful and are regularly used by internet marketers.
However there are a couple of areas where you should never use ‘free’ resources
You see advertisements for free web hosting, this is tempting for the newcomer on a tight budget, but it is not a commercially viable option. You spend a lot of time building your new website and post it on the web for all to see, you build a reputation based on that address.
If you have it hosted on a free site:
- you don’t own the address, the owner is allowing you to use it.
- They frequently pay for it by putting advertisements onto your pages, that may be detrimental to your content,
- they also often place restrictions on what you can put onto your site.
There was one I saw recently that advertised that you could use your own domain name and they would register that for free as well.
Reading the small print I noticed that:
- They retain ownership of the domain name
- You had extremely limited access to the control panel
- You could only have either a content site or a blog
- They would put advertisements on your website
- If you had less than 300 visitors a month they could close you down.
Does that sound like a good deal on the long term.
The paid option is much better, and it is not that expensive, well worth the investment.

Once you have your website up and running you need to create something you can use to attract people to sign up to your list.
The most common way to do this is through the use of a ‘squeeze page’, this is a simple page that does not try to sell anything, all it does is asks for some personal details, often just a name and email address in exchange for something of value.
Here are some examples of squeeze pages Renegade University this one asks for First and last names, email address, phone number and a username for you to use. This is more than most of these ask for, another is Building on a budget as you can see all these ask for is information in exchange for a free product.
All that is really needed is just name and email, the more information you ask for on the squeeze page the less likely people are to sign up. This can be a good thing, as if they bother to fill out quite a bit of information they are more likely to be serious about joining.
There are many programs available that will create a squeeze page for you, but it is not hard to create your own. All you need is a basic Template and you can fill in your own details.
